Mission Statement
The CLSE Department creates active learning environments inviting communities of engaged faculty, college students, and community partners (CLSE community of practice) to promote learning, equitable access, and positive developmental outcomes for children, youth, and families. Our faculty prepare current and future professionals to respect the individual needs of children in school and beyond, and foster caring, stimulating environments that are responsive to their social, emotional, physical, and intellectual development. Celebrating the rich diversity in communities served by our current students and faculty, our department engages with community partners to collaborate in community-based initiatives. The CLSE community of practice explores innovative, justice-centered approaches to curriculum, pedagogy, and scholarship that contribute to a healthy, just, and sustainable society.
Vision Statement
The CLSE community of practice envisions a world in which educators and professionals understand, respect, and nurture the capabilities and potential of all children, youth, and their families. The department and its faculty will continue to be recognized as a state and national leader for its ongoing commitment to building sustainable community partnerships and collaborative relationships among researchers, educators, families, and other stakeholders who share this vision. Our community of practice will distinguish itself through the generation, dissemination, and application of knowledge in transformative ways, and its excellence in preparing college students to become reflective, reflexive, and impactful leaders in our diverse and global society. The CLSE Department’s mission and vision embody its programs’ goals and aspirations of our faculty members and align with RCOE’s mission and vision and strategic platform as well as Appalachian State University’s mission and strategic plan.
