Dr. Daniel Poling completed his Ph.D. in special education with a focus on students with emotional and behavioral disorders and a minor in research and evaluation methodology at the University of Florida.
Prior to joining Appalachian, Dr. Poling was an Institute of Education Sciences postdoctoral research fellow at the University of Nebraska-Lincoln. During his 13 years as a special education teacher, Dr. Poling provided academic instruction and behavior support to K-12 students with emotional and behavioral needs in Maryland and North Carolina.
He currently teaches both undergraduate and graduate-level courses on meeting student’s emotional and behavioral needs, academic writing, and special education instructional methods.
His research interests include teacher-student relationships, social-emotional learning, executive function, and verbal aggression.
Dr. Poling has presented his research at state, national, and international conferences. In addition to co-authoring two book chapters, he has published several articles that appear in Behavioral Disorders, Assessment, and Journal of Emotional and Behavioral Disorders.
He is currently on the editorial board of Intervention in School and Clinic and serves as a guest reviewer for several journals, including Behavioral Disorders and Journal of Emotional and Behavioral Disorders. Dr. Poling previously served on the executive committee of the Council for Exceptional Children’s Division for Emotional and Behavioral Health.
