Dr. Elizabeth (Beth) M. Frye is a professor of literacy education and chair of the Department of Child Development, Literacy, and Special Education at Appalachian State University. In 2006 and 2014, she was the recipient of the Reich College of Education (RCOE) Outstanding Teaching Award, and in 2021, as part of the Literacy-Cast team, she received the RCOE's Community of Practice Award. Dr. Frye co-chairs App State's Biennial Children's Literature Symposium presented by the University Libraries and the Reich College of Education.
Dr. Frye’s research focuses on writing instruction and children's literature. She is particularly interested in pedagogical practices that support practitioners’ engagement with contemporary children's literature in order to foster children's reading comprehension, vocabulary growth, and to expand their knowledge of critical issues. Her years of experience as a reading specialist and an elementary classroom teacher undergird her commitment to literacy teacher education. Beth is an outdoor enthusiast and enjoys running, mountain biking, and hiking with her husband and their three dogs.
