Dr. Ashley E. Pennell is an assistant professor . She holds an Ed.D. from Appalachian State University, where she studied beginning reading instruction and clinical approaches to teaching children with reading difficulties, an M.A. from Appalachian State University, where she studied reading education, and a B.S. in elementary education, also from Appalachian State University.
She taught first and second grade in the North Carolina public school system. Dr. Pennell currently teaches courses in early literacy development and instruction, children’s literature, and diagnosis and assessment of reading difficulties. She teaches courses at both the undergraduate and graduate levels.
Her research interests include beginning reading development, assessment, and instruction; instruction for children with reading difficulties; and children’s literature. Her recent publications appear in The Reading Teacher and Reading Psychology.
