Rhonda Russell is a senior lecturer in Department of Child Development, Literacy, and Special Education at Appalachian State University. She earned her master’s degree in Child Development: Birth–Kindergarten from Appalachian State University and holds licensures in Birth–Kindergarten, Elementary Education and Family and Consumer Sciences Education (6-12)
Russell has worked as a preschool and kindergarten teacher across a range of settings, including public schools, Head Start, and community-based programs. Her work in higher education focuses on supporting students’ understanding of child development through practicum experiences that emphasize intentional teaching, reflection, and relationship-based practice.
Her scholarly and professional interests include constructivist approaches to early childhood education and child-centered practices that support development through play and inquiry. She is actively engaged in community-based research and workforce development initiatives, collaborating with schools and early childhood organizations across North Carolina to strengthen connections between research and practice. She also serves as the faculty advisor for the Child Advocacy Club, supporting student engagement in advocacy and professional development opportunities.
