Dr. Rebecca Shankland

Rebecca K. Shankland is an Associate Professor in the Department of Child Development, Literacy, and Special Education at Appalachian State University where she teaches courses in reading and writing strategies, developing inclusive learning communities, and action research.  She also supervises student teachers and interns as they implement research-based practices in their classrooms. She has taught at all grade levels in both general and special education in urban, suburban, and rural schools.  She holds a PhD in Special Education and Literacy from Michigan State University.  Research interests include co-teaching, content literacy instruction, struggling readers and writers, and the preparation of inclusive and reflective teachers.  She has published and presented at the national and international level; her work can be found in Reading and Writing Quarterly, Education and Urban Society, Assessment for Effective Intervention, Reading and Writing: An Interdisciplinary Journal, Written Communication, and the American Reading Forum Annual Yearbook and in books published by Guilford Publications and Teachers College Press.
